Positions at Finance Lab


1. Visiting Faculty Position:

Finance Lab offers a visiting faculty position for one year. The principal functions of the visiting scholar will be:
  • To undertake collaborative research with faculty of Finance & Control group,
  • To teach one FP-level course,
  • To offer two seminars, and
  • To mentor FP students.
The research should finally lead to a joint publication in a leading journal.
The visiting faculty will be paid economy class return air-fare, local hospitality for self, and honorarium equivalent to the salary of an IIMC faculty (excluding HRA) at similar grade for one year.

2. Trainee Research Associates:

The Finance Lab offers Trainee Research Associate positions. It is a purely contractual position of up to two years at a consolidated stipend of up to Rs.25,000 per month. A higher start may be considered for deserving candidates. Qualification:
  • PhDs/Post graduate in statistics/mathematics/computer science/economics
  • OR
  • MBA from IIM
Experience: For those who fulfill qualification (a), work experience is not necessary. Minimum three years of work experience in banking and financial services sector is necessary for those who fulfill qualification (b) above.
Age: Not exceeding 30 years
Job Description: We seek individuals with talent, drive and natural flair for research. The successful candidate should be passionate about issues related to finance, starting from researching ideas and testing them on historical data thinking about their implications in the policy and practice arena. The candidate should possess adequate computing skills, including knowledge of statistical software such as SAS, MATLAB etc. The candidate will work under the direction of IIM Calcutta faculty members and be capable of carrying out independent research. He/she is expected to approach all new ideas with an open mind, with a reliance on the scientific research process.
Key responsibilities:
  • Work with a small, dynamic academic team looking to quickly develop ideas to research output.
  • Communicate with other researchers in order to help achieve best practices in the area. Desired Capabilities:
  • Ability to conduct high quality empirical research
  • Excellent quantitative skills and experience in utilizing those skills in a research environment.
  • A good understanding of financial markets in India and worldwide, including drivers of return and risk.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate must have the confidence and credibility to persuasively interact with research collegues, academics and corporate executives.
  • Thorough understanding of computer technology useful for financial research, with strengths in statistical analysis and programming.
  • Strong insights into data available within different segments of the financial markets, the ability to parse out relevant data and construct databases that are useful for validating research results.

3. Summer/winter Interns:

The Finance Lab offers summer/winter internship positions (for a period of 8-10 weeks) to students of IIT/ISI/IGIDR/TIFR etc at a monthly stipend of Rs. 3000 per intern. Such internship will be offered only to candidates recommended by a faculty of the Finance and Control group. The recommending faculty would supervise the intern. Ideally such interns should help a faculty in his/her research. The intern may also be engaged for developing software tools in the Finance Lab. A maximum of ten internship positions can be offered in a year.
